Ackworth House Project Case Study: Queen St, Auckland CBD

Ackworth House has specialised in the joinery industry for over 40 years, providing floating stair designs and remodels across New Zealand. We’ve worked hard to become a trustworthy and reliable joinery and construction company New Zealand homeowners turn to when planning to build their transitional spaces between levels.

Today we’ll be showcasing one of our most recent projects, giving you an inside look into our installation process and the total transformation we create for our clients.

Queen Street Planning

Auckland’s ‘Golden Mile’ Queen Street is known for its busy streets’ day or night. It’s slowly moved its way into the most known street in Auckland city, everyone has a memory of walking down Queen street at some point in their life.

Auckland and the central city streets date back to 1840. Queen Street took a smaller role during its first few established years before eventually taking over Commercial Bay and Shortland St as the main commercial strip. Today you’ll find a diverse range of shops lining up and down Queen street, undoubtedly one of the most well-known streets in New Zealand.

Our client for this project was situated on a prime spot in Queen street. Their upmarket retail store needed a renovation to bring its interior up to date with the modern interior stylings of its competitors along this hot spot shopping street. We worked closely with the project’s architect and shop fitting company to provide the appropriate design, materials, and colours to achieve the client’s desired end outcome.

Building and Design

The brief for this project was to create a strong level of sophistication through careful styling and detailing in their stairway. Their current style was dated and not aptly fitted for the current customers that were shopping there. This new design needed to meet the requirements and expectations of their customers and the brand’s upscale market.

In order to modernise the central stairwell in the clients store we manufactured and installed the concealed steel stringers, marble treads and risers, golden steel balustrade and handrail to create this amazing staircase that fit seamlessly into the rest of the newly renovated shop front.

Final Outcome

It’s fair to say that the end product (pictured below) was unrecognisable to its former design. The removal of the worn carpet replaced with stone treads, gold handrails and balustrade transformed the old and dull stair into a light and tasteful central focus for any customer who enters into the store. The change of the stairs current design to a floating staircase created an open area that extended all the way through to the back of the store, creating a warm space that draws the shopper in, viewing all the products our client had to offer

This refreshed the stairway, added value to our clients’ building, as well as towards the shopping experience of their customers. We provided this renovation with the quality it deserved for its superb placement. Bringing its interior design up to date with the timeless architectural designs seen along the exterior of Queen St.
